ISO 14001

BS EN ISO 14001 Environmental Management

ISO 14001 is a globally recognized standard for an environmental management system (EMS). This standard defines the requirements for understanding, controlling and improving the organization’s environmental impact.

The ISO 14001 standard recommends controls for those processes that have an environmental impact (which is just about all companies) due to the use of environment resources, environmental waste management & energy consumption.

What is the purpose of ISO 14001?
The main purpose of ISO 14001 is to define the requirements of an Environmental Management System (EMS) and provides guidance for its implementation. The standard gives a structured approach for making environmental improvements within the organization’s undertakings.

Key Benefits of implementing ISO 14001
Implementation of an environment management system gives an organization or company a systematic way for controlling their environmental impact. Hence the productivity and efficiency is increased so there are more cost savings in the organization. Another key benefit of implementing the ISO 14001 environment system is that it gives the structure for an organization to attain a very good level of environmental performance that shows the complete commitment of an organization in controlling the impact of environment waste, pollution and energy consumption.

A systematic approach to environmental management can provide senior management with information to build success over the long term and create options for contributing to sustainable development by:

  • Protecting the environment by preventing or mitigating adverse environmental impacts.
  • Mitigating the potential adverse effect of environmental conditions on the organisation.
  • Assisting the organisation in the fulfilment of compliance obligations.
  • Enhancing environmental performance.
  • Controlling, or influencing the way the organisations product and services are designed, manufactured, distributed, consumed and disposed of using a life cycle perspective that can prevent environmental impacts from being unintentionally shifted elsewhere within the life cycle.
  • Achieving financial and operational benefits that can result from implementing environmentally sound alternatives that strengthen the organisations market position.
  • Communicating environmental information to relevant interested parties.

The other key benefits of implementing ISO 14001:

  • Cost Savings due to increased environmental efficiency
  • Cutback of environmental responsibilities
  • Cutback of environmental risk
  • Increased organization ability to battle in a global marketplace
