CITB SSSTS Course

Construction sites are responsible for more workplace deaths than any other industry. The UK construction industry is responsible for 1.6 fatal injuries for every 100,000 workers. Falling from height and heavy machinery accidents are the most common causes of fatal accidents, but fire, hazardous substances, and poor occupational health are almost as deadly.

A well-supervised construction site is a safe construction site, but it’s not easy to prepare your workers for supervisory roles. That’s where the CITB SSSTS Course steps in. This comprehensive two-day course gives new chargehands and site foremen the knowledge they need to bolster your management team’s site safety efforts.

Course Structure

The CITB SSSTS Course covers a wide array of safety supervision issues, including first aid, PPE, and equipment regulations. It will equip your workers with health and safety legislation knowledge and teach them how to complete effective site inductions. They’ll also learn how to intervene when they see poor work practices. The course always uses updated legislation that impacts the supervisory role. We cover:

  • Safety regulations and legislation
  • Supervisory skills
  • Creating and supervising safer work strategies, including occupational health and safety
  • Fire prevention and suppression
  • Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) and how to fulfil them. This includes construction phase planning, pre-construction data assessments, and HSE project notifications.
  • How to supervise the safe handling of hazardous substances
  • How to fulfil the Provisions and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER). These laws help your supervisors to protect their workers from hazardous machinery and work equipment accidents.
  • Supervising work at height according to the Work at Height Regulations of 2005, which was designed to reduce fatal falls.
  • PPE management
  • Manual handling. Working with heavy equipment and hazardous materials can cause severe injuries, so we’ll teach your upcoming supervisors how to reduce injuries in their teams.
  • Accident Investigation. This part of the course will teach supervisors how to assess the cause of accidents so that they can be avoided in the future
  • First aid
  • Safety monitoring: Your supervisors will learn how to gauge their HSE performance and make sure staff are held accountable for their role in site safety.

This course is eligible for CITB Grant Funding for registered companies.

Course Design

The course covers 15 hours of training over two days. It relies on a range of supporting materials, including construction site drawings, COSHH assessment templates, and in-house toolbox talks. Your workers will learn how to work collaboratively and make effective group decisions. To improve memory retention, we’ll use simple scenarios and exercises to prepare learners for the situations they’ll encounter in their day-to-day work. Delegates will complete group exercises and practise their powers of observation.

Once the course has been successfully completed, delegates will have the qualifications they need to move onto niche CITB site supervision courses for environmental awareness, director’s supervision, and temporary works.
